La Quinta High School duo wins first place at 2016 ocMaker Challenge for innovative ‘Fork Five’ design

The Fork Five received the ultimate “high five” at the 2016 ocMaker Challenge.

Two students from La Quinta High School in the Garden Grove Unified School District took home first place at this year’s competition for their creative design of a prototype fork that makes eating spaghetti easier.

A STEM-based design competition that promotes creativity and innovation, the ocMaker Challenge called for middle school, high school and community college teams to create new products that address a unique problem, need or want.

The first place team, La Quinta High School junior Ngoc Anh Dao and senior Geneva Nguyen, did just that.

The duo designed the Fork Five with a hook at the end that takes the mess and hassle out of eating spaghetti. The hook helps to wrap the spaghetti and keeps it in place on the utensil.

The students were recognized at the Discovery Cube and awarded $200 from the event’s business supporters and sponsors.
