Three OC campuses earn spots on state’s list of model middle schools

Three Orange County campuses have earned their way onto a list of California’s top-performing middle schools.

Hilton D. Bell Intermediate School in the Garden Grove Unified School District, Cerro Villa Middle School in the Orange Unified School District and Ladera Vista Junior High School of the Arts in the Fullerton School District are among 22 sites recognized through California’s 2017-18 Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage program.

Hilton D. Bell Intermediate School in the Garden Grove Unified School District was one of three Orange County campuses recognized this year through the state’s Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage program.

Another two dozen schools that were winners in previous years will retain their designation based on their continued progress.

Model schools in the Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage program were selected for demonstrating academic excellence, social equity and responsiveness to the needs of their students, according to the California Department of Education.

“Congratulations to these schools for doing excellent work to help students believe in themselves, set high goals, and dream big,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, who made the announcement on Monday. “These schools are outstanding examples of how educational innovations can keep students engaged and learning throughout a transitional time in their lives.”
