Two Orange County students recently received top h

Two Orange County students recently received top honors in the annual Congressional Art Competition.

Senior Raymond Tran-Nguyen of Costa Mesa High School earned the People’s Choice award in the 48th congressional district, and Catherine Liu of Oxford Academy was recognized by the 47th congressional district.

Each student will have their award-winning artwork on display in the United States Capitol for one year. @newportmesausd @anaheimunion

Six years ago, a group of Woodbury Elementary stud

Six years ago, a group of Woodbury Elementary students made a promise to annually write letters to a Seattle-based financial services CEO. In exchange, when they finished high school and gave him their final letters, he would give each student a $1,000 scholarship. Earlier this week, Dan Price, CEO of Gravity Payments, made good on that promise by returning to Woodbury to personally hand-deliver more than $50,000 in scholarships to the graduates. As an added bonus, students received $1,500 each — instead of the original $1,000 — accounting for interest over the last six years. Students and staff at @eisenhower_ggusd in the Garden Grove Unified School District were treated to a very special visit from State Superintendent Tony Thurmond today.

During his visit, Superintendent Thurmond toured classrooms as well as the school’s garden and outdoor education experience.

During his remarks, Thurmond said he knows what he saw in Garden Grove today, students learning in-person, is exactly what California and our nation needs - to see examples of how we can make in-person learning work for all students. @cadepted @tonythurmondspi

Two middle school teams from OC — @lakeside_iusd

Two middle school teams from OC — @lakeside_iusd Middle School in the @irvine_unified and Fairmont Private Schools‘ Historic Anaheim Campus — were awarded silver medals in their respective grade levels at the 2021 United States Academic Pentathlon.

Only two teams are invited to the national competition from each state and this year, and both of California’s teams were from Orange County — a feat that hasn’t occurred since Fairmont took the national championship in 2016!

A trio of students from @universityhighschool in @

A trio of students from @universityhighschool in @irvine_unified recently took third place in a “Shark Tank”-style competition organized by @irvinevalleycollege entrepreneurship program.

Each of the top three winners in the "Idea Pitch Competition" received a cash prize and more than $2,000 in business start-up services. The University High team also won the Audience Choice Award.

Today, on #TraumaSurvivorsDay we celebrate the strength and resiliency of trauma survivors. As an @acesaware grantee, OCDE is proud to partner with @CAPublicHealth and @CA_OSG to bring awareness to ACEs and the importance of trauma-informed care.

@therealshannonlee, daughter of legendary martial

@therealshannonlee, daughter of legendary martial artist and actor @brucelee, recently shared stories with students from OCDE’s Alternative Education program. Lee, an author, entertainer and entrepreneur was the latest speaker in OCDE’s “Careers without Borders” series.

While martial arts have been part of her life since birth, Lee talked about training after the tragic loss of her father as a way to connect with him and his life’s passion. True to his teachings, she discovered that fighting was less about striking and more about finding inner-strength, particularly when an opponent is bearing down.

Addressing the recent rise in anti-Asian hate incidents and attacks, Lee said her father was proud of being Chinese and would be disheartened by reports of racism and xenophobia. He felt that separating people by race or economic class represented an outdated way of thinking, she said, and it’s telling that he embraced all martial arts styles to develop his own hybrid expression, called Jeet Kune Do.

Engineering students from Estancia High School in

Engineering students from Estancia High School in the @newportmesausd recently landed a first-place team win at the 2021 Vital Link Energy Invitational Engineering Design Competition for turning a simple go-kart into an extremely energy-efficient electric car.

The sixteen seniors — dubbed “Team Havoc” — were tasked with crafting a vehicle large enough to accommodate a driver that could travel as fast and as far as possible on only $1 worth of energy.
