It’s a wrap for OCDE’s 2022 graduation season. It’s a wrap for OCDE’s 2022 graduation season. More than 100 students from the Alternative, Community and Correctional Educational Schools and Services program, or ACCESS, received their high school diplomas this afternoon. 

This June, nearly 700 ACCESS students earned diplomas. They have overcome major hurdles like homelessness, pregnancy, single parenting and academic challenges.

Nonprofit organization @jaorangecounty named Count Nonprofit organization @jaorangecounty named County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Mijares as the 2022 Spirit of JA. He’ll be recognized at an event in July for positively impacting the community and the thousands of students served by organization.

From actors to astronauts to professional sports h From actors to astronauts to professional sports hall-of-famers like former San Francisco Ronnie Lott, Careers Without Borders has brought professionals from differing fields to the computer screens of students in alternative education. 

The guest speaker series was created in 2020 within the Alternative, Community and Correctional Educational Schools and Services program, or ACCESS, at the Orange County Department of Education.

Through the interviews, the Careers Without Borders program allows students in alternative education the opportunity to gain insight on the humble beginnings of its successful guest speakers.

Orange County high school students are invited to Orange County high school students are invited to a free "Better Money Habits" session hosted by Bank of America prior to the annual @ChapmanU Economic Forecast Conference on Thursday, June 23. Students will learn how to develop important financial management skills, such as budgeting, financing college, understanding their paycheck, and building and using credit wisely. 

At 1 p.m., OC high school students and recent grads can attend the special reception and financial education session and then attend the Economic Forecast Conference at 3 p.m. Both events are at the Musco Center for the Arts on the university’s campus in Orange. General admission for the in-person conference is usually $150, but it’s free for high school students who attend the 1 p.m. reception.

The 2022 California MTSS Professional Learning Ins The 2022 California MTSS Professional Learning Institute has lined up more than 150 including Dr. Adolph Brown, III. The keynote speaker is a career educator and mental health professional known for relevant, relatable and entertaining presentations. 

As a former at-promise student who “had one foot in gifted education and the other in alternative education,” @adolphbrown reinforces the idea that the whole student deserves a whole education. 

Hosted by OCDE, the Butte County Office of Education and the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools, thousands of teachers, administrators, counselors and other school-based professionals are expected to attend the summer conference at the Anaheim Convention Center July 12 through July 14.

There are only a few weeks left to visit the Galer There are only a few weeks left to visit the Galería of Imagination to see 75 pieces of artwork created by artists with disabilities. OCDE’s VSA Orange County selected 7-year-old Mario Roblero’s painting among a collection of 350 pieces. Galería of Imagination is located on the first floor near JCPenney inside of MainPlace Mall in Santa Ana.

It is open to the public between Thursdays and Sundays during these specific hours:
* Thursdays between 2 to 6:00 p.m.
* Fridays between 12 to 7:00 p.m.
* Saturdays between 12 to 7:00 p.m.
* Sundays between 12 to 7:00 p.m.

The gallery will be hosting this event through July 31.

The North Orange County Regional Occupational Prog The North Orange County Regional Occupational Program recently announced Dana Lynch as its new superintendent. With more than 25 years dedicated to public education, Lynch will be leading a program that offers career technical education coursework and career readiness training to more than 16,000 students at 25 high schools, three junior high schools, two middle schools and two Regional Occupational Program facilities.

More than 170 students who aged out of the school More than 170 students who aged out of the school system, but had a desire to complete their graduation requirements celebrated their achievements at a commencement ceremony held on June 10. 

A first of its kind for the county, OCDE’s College and Career Preparatory Academy (CCPA) was created to fill gaps in services currently available to people between 18 to 25 years old. The academy offers courses based around work-life schedules, as well as career planning, college options and workforce preparation.

96 students who’ve faced significant obstacles a 96 students who’ve faced significant obstacles and accepted a chance to change nearly six months ago are seeing firsthand how hard work and determination can lead to something great. They are Sunburst Youth Academy’s class 29. 

Operated by the California National Guard in partnership with OCDE, the academy is a community high school for at-risk youth. 96 student cadets graduated from the academy on June 10 and 16 of them also earned their high school diplomas.

The ACCESS class of 2022 gathered to celebrate the The ACCESS class of 2022 gathered to celebrate their high school completion at their June 9 commencement ceremony. More than 250 graduates from Areas 2, 3 and 4 heard from honored speakers and walked the stage to receive congratulations from their mentors, classmates and loved ones.
Laguna Road Elementary School will become the late Laguna Road Elementary School will become the latest dual language school in Orange County as the Fullerton School District implements its new Korean dual language program this August. Starting with one kindergarten classroom, the program aims to help students achieve bilingualism and biliteracy while reaching higher levels of academic success and cultural awareness from a young age. 

“Fullerton School District’s Dual Language Academy is essential not only for our emergent bilingual [English learner] students but all students,” program specialist Nadia Williams said. “Students are getting an amazing education with the added benefit of becoming biliterate.”

A half-dozen Buena Park High School students recen A half-dozen Buena Park High School students recently became the first cohort in California to receive advanced technology certifications at their campus through the Smart Automation Certification Alliance, or SACA.

“The fact that our students have equitable access to the right equipment provides them the opportunity to learn and master hands-on skills in several aspects of the automated manufacturing industry,” Buena Park High instructor Maroun Nehme said. “Armed with the right knowledge and set of skills, our students are better prepared for the fast-changing world they will encounter after high school.”
