The OCDE’s Inside the Outdoors program empowers students, teachers, parents and their community to explore natural areas and expand their knowledge, understanding and stewardship of the environment.

In about a week, Corona del Mar High School studen In about a week, Corona del Mar High School students will be back in school comparing their summer breaks, and rising senior Luke Ianni will be able to share how he spent his time.

The Newport-Mesa Unified student wrote a children’s book about a boy who lives with stuttering. In many ways, Luke’s book resembles his own life as he has also dealt with stuttering. His story was featured in the Los Angeles Times’ Daily Pilot.

A drawing that took middle school student Sunday V A drawing that took middle school student Sunday Vu a couple of months to complete is making its rounds for public display. 

Etched and drawn completely in pencil, the rising eighth-grader from the Westminster School District drew a black and white image of a cat looking up intently at a monarch butterfly. Sunday named this piece “Ray of Hope.”

Her piece of artwork is one of more than 200 pieces that are currently on display at the 90th Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach.

On Aug. 3, the Orange Unified School District celebrated the opening of the new aquatic center at the school with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new pool deck.

The Orange County Friday Night Live Partnership tu The Orange County Friday Night Live Partnership turns 30 this year. If you’re not familiar with @OrangeCountyFNL, it encourages young people to take the lead on alcohol and drug prevention campaigns and community service initiatives. Along the way, they learn leadership, communication, team-building and problem-solving skills. 

Today, there are 25 FNL chapters across the county.

County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Mijares wa County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Mijares was named the 2022 JA Champion honoree by an organization called Junior Achievement of Orange County. 

@jaorangecounty considers Dr. Mijares a true advocate for the community and its students. Junior Achievement works with young people and prepares them for success in a global economy. The organization strives to improve the quality of life for all students by providing them with the economic and financial knowledge needed to transition into adulthood. 

The superintendent was officially recognized at a ceremony on July 28 by Les McCabe, the president and CEO of @ja_socal president, and Burgandie Onekea, the regional executive director.

31 high school students who are facing barriers in 31 high school students who are facing barriers in their lives broke out of their shells to perform at the @SegerstromArts.

The teenaged students are from OCDE’s Alternative, Community and Correctional Education Schools and Services program. Having little to no experience in musical theater or performing live, the students learned how to put their shows together in two weeks.

Ballerina Misty Copeland recently spoke to educato Ballerina Misty Copeland recently spoke to educators and students from the Orange County Department of Education’s ACCESS program about her life and career as part of the Careers Without Borders speakers series. 

In 2015, Copeland became the first Black woman promoted to the role of principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre. She said she hopes to show the students that with hard work, dedication and commitment, so much is possible.

Welcome to August, the month that marks the start Welcome to August, the month that marks the start of the 2022-23 school year — or the end of summer vacation, depending on your point of view — for most Orange County school districts.

Students in the Savanna School District, which serves parts of Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress and Stanton, will be the first in the county to report back on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

The U.S. Department of Education selected Katella The U.S. Department of Education selected Katella High School as a Green Ribbon School and a KTLA 5 meteorologist reminisced about her time as a Garden Grove Unified School District student. These are just a couple education stories that we’ve been tracking our weekly roundup.

Summer plans look different for every student, but Summer plans look different for every student, but nearly 80 rising seniors from the Garden Grove Unified School District maximized their weeks off from school by preparing for their future. 

The high school students participated in the district’s six-week summer internship program where they were paired with more than 30 local partners, offering internships and mentorship opportunities. The program was established ten years ago and in the past five years has expanded with a collaboration through Orange County United Way’s work-based learning initiative called Youth Career Connections. 

Some of the local partners include Microsoft, Eaton Aerospace, Disneyland Resort, Alcon and Children’s Health of Orange County.

From making small changes in their communities to From making small changes in their communities to now leading them, two recent high school graduates and two high school seniors were chosen as Bank of America Student Leaders this summer for their work with community-focused initiatives and their passion for helping others. 

Every year, the Student Leaders program at @BankofAmerica selects 300 juniors and seniors across the United States who volunteer their time to make a difference in their communities. This year’s recipients in the Orange County area include Jenny Chavez from @AnaheimUnion, Jay Morgan from @hb_uhsd, Cindy Ding and Kevin Sohn from @irvine_unified.

To top off a stellar senior year playing baseball To top off a stellar senior year playing baseball for the Anaheim High School Colonists and scoring a scholarship to play softball for the California State University San Marcos Division II-ranked softball team, @JillianAlbayati received an honorary Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award, better known as an ESPY, for Women in Sports.

For the seventh year, the @AnaheimUnion High School District collaborated with @CSUFOfficial to host the Summer Language Academy to provide an affirming space for students to explore who they are, who their peers are and how they can find their place, without giving up their identity, culture and language.

From toys to fantasy novels to figurines, Westmins From toys to fantasy novels to figurines, Westminster School District students unearthed relics from the past as part of their time capsule event that began in May. Elementary school classmates had the opportunity to dig up time capsules left by students from 2003 and replace them with their own treasured items to be rediscovered in 10 years.
