U.S. News & World Report has released its 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings, with 29 Orange County campuses earning 31 placements among California’s top 100. The latest rankings reflect student achievement in math and reading, along with socioeconomic factors.
For Orange County School of the Arts senior Julian Maya, storytelling is a way to keep family memories and traditions alive.
Now, he’s creating opportunities for other young film students to do the same. Through the Rooted Film Festival, Julian hopes to bring students together to explore their identities and share personal experiences through filmmaking.
Wendy Saldivar of Loara Elementary School in Anaheim has been named one of five 2027 California Teachers of the Year. Fellow Orange County educator Brittany Walters of Dr. Peter Marshall Elementary School was also recognized as a state finalist.
Saddleback High School is one of 10 Orange County public schools originally selected for a $10,000 Future Innovators Initiative grant from Hyundai. The school plans to use the funding to help develop a half-acre learning farm focused on science, sustainability and agriculture.

OCDE is accepting breakout session proposals and award nominations for the 2027 Orange County Counselor Symposium, set for Feb. 9 in Costa Mesa. The annual event will feature keynote speaker Steve Pemberton and recognize outstanding school counselors and advocates from across Orange County.
