More than 2,500 educators from throughout Californ More than 2,500 educators from throughout California gathered virtually this week for a three-day Professional Learning Institute aimed at sharing practices that support the academic, behavioral and social-emotional success of all students. A new initiative approved last week by the @goOCTA A new initiative approved last week by the @goOCTA Board of Directors will soon allow all passengers ages 18 and under to ride the bus for free. As part of a six-month promotional program funded by a state grant, the “Youth Ride Free pass” will allow OC youth to ride any OCTA fixed-route bus in Orange County at no cost. The pass program is scheduled to begin in September and run through the end of Feb. 2022. You can learn more about the program by clicking our link in bio.
A panel of educational leaders will define ethnic A panel of educational leaders will define ethnic studies and discuss California’s model curriculum during an online forum presented by the Orange County Department of Education. Hosted by Orange County Superintendent Dr. Al Mijares, the event titled “With Liberty and Justice for All: A Colloquium on Ethnic Studies” is set to take place from 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21. More than 300 educators, school workers and law en More than 300 educators, school workers and law enforcement representatives are set to convene in Orange County this week to address critical school safety issues. The 12th annual Safe Schools Conference, which returns to an in-person format after going virtual last year, will take place Wednesday, July 14 through Friday, July 16 at Delta Hotels Anaheim Garden Grove. Students who attend the program are immersed for five and a half months in a military-style environment where they can earn high school credits while developing leadership, pride, confidence and academic skills. Huntington Beach Union High School District offici Huntington Beach Union High School District officials yesterday officially revealed the Sylvia Mendez Learning Pavilion at Westminster High School @whsasb during an afternoon celebration that featured student Folklorico dancers, steel drum music, a percussive performance by the school’s Vietnamese American Culture Club, empanadas, the debut of a massive outside mural, and a tour of the new facility, which more than earned the approval of its namesake. In case you aren’t familiar with the Mendez family, Sylvia Mendez is a central figure in the legal fight to integrate local schools years before the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board decision. The case of Mendez v. Westminster brought transformative change to Orange County and paved the way for the desegregation of schools across the nation. To learn more about the monumental Mendez, et al v. Westminster case and the new Sylvia Mendez Learning Pavilion at Westminster High School, head to the OCDE Newsroom (link in bio).
Language divides, homelessness, pregnancy, single Language divides, homelessness, pregnancy, single parenting, and social and academic challenges are just some of the hurdles the 2021 graduating class of OCDE’s alternative education division has faced. But navigating these obstacles — plus the stresses related to learning during a global pandemic — could not deter the department’s nearly 700 graduates from commencing toward brighter futures. Welcome to the OC, Lowell Joint School District! Welcome to the OC, Lowell Joint School District! The Lowell Joint School District, which has long operated under the umbrella of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, will transfer over to OCDE’s jurisdiction starting Thursday, July 1, nearly 16 months after the shift was approved by local voters. OCDE Newsroom staff recently came across a video f OCDE Newsroom staff recently came across a video featuring an uplifting virtual choir performance made up of more than 100 fifth-grade students from across the @tustinusd. After speaking with music teacher, Vici Cope, we learned that the honor choir — fittingly named Voices United — performed 100 percent virtually for the entire school year. To celebrate the resilience, patience and enthusiasm of students and teachers throughout this challenging year, the team released their production of the song “A Walk through Life” by Pink Zebra. A video of their inspiring performance, which was conducted, produced and edited by the Tustin Unified music team, can be viewed in the OCDE Newsroom (link in bio).
Registration is now open for OCDE's fifth annual Registration is now open for OCDE's fifth annual Interpreters and Translators Conference. Beginning Sept. 8 and continuing through Oct. 2 , the conference will feature 20 live, one-hour sessions on Thursdays and Fridays for four weeks, covering such topics as remote interpreting, cultural challenges, technology, best practices for translations and more.
