Kindergarten readiness, graduation rates and degrees in the STEM fields were highlighted this week in the latest Orange County Community Indicators report.

Presented by the Orange County Business Council @ocbiz_council and other local partners, the 2021-22 indicators report tracks a wide range of issues deemed critical to the county’s long-term health and prosperity, including education, health, housing, income, civic engagement and the economy. We’re celebrating the cultures, contributions, and histories of Hispanic and Latino-identified communities from around the country during National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Here’s a brief history lesson on this origin of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Rather than starting at the beginning of September, Hispanic Heritage Month takes place over 30 days beginning on the 15th.

Why?
A number of Latin American countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all recognize September 15 as the date of their independence. But Mexico's independence is celebrated September 16 and Chile celebrates its independence September 18.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. #HispanicHeritageMonth

As part of an ongoing effort to help inform and educate local communities about the importance of screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences — or ACEs — and responding with trauma-informed care, OCDE has recently partnered with Kaiser Permanente Thriving Schools on the Resilience in School Environments initiative.

Referred to as RISE, the national initiative was developed to equip teachers and staff with skills and resources to strengthen their emotional health and that of their students to foster a more positive, supportive learning environment.

There’s still time for educators, parents and co

There’s still time for educators, parents and community members to register for a month-long virtual conference aimed at enhancing school-based interpretation and translation services.

Hosted by OCDE’s Educational Services division, the fifth annual Interpreters and Translators Conference began this week and continues through Oct. 2. It features 20 live, one-hour sessions on Thursdays and Fridays for four weeks, covering such topics as remote interpreting, cultural challenges, technology, best practices for translations and more.

Raised by a single father, a victim of abuse, and

Raised by a single father, a victim of abuse, and placed in the foster care system at only 12 years old, OCDE ACCESS student Kaiyanna Han had the odds stacked against her.

But despite her challenging childhood, the 11th grader from William Lyon school serves as an inspiration in more ways than one. Han was recently recognized by the Association of California School Administrators — or ACSA — with the 2021 Every Student Succeeding Award for Region 17 @acsa_region17

Did you know that between 2016 and 2018, suicide was the second leading cause of death among Orange County youth ages 15 to 19 years, according to the latest Conditions of Children in Orange County report?

With September recognized as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Newsroom staff reached out to OCDE’s regional mental health coordinators and the department’s Crisis Response Network to share some of the risk factors and warning signs associated with suicide, along with steps to take if you believe someone needs help.

Mark your calendar! The Orange County Children’s

Mark your calendar! The Orange County Children’s Book Festival is partnering with OCDE, Orange County Public Libraries, 4SPACE Co., and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory education department to launch the S.T.E.A.M. Race to Space Reading Challenge.

The first-of-its-kind reading challenge will run from Oct. 22 through Nov. 12 and is open to all Orange County students grades from transitional kindergarten through grade 12.

Did you know that the first Labor Day was celebrat

Did you know that the first Labor Day was celebrated on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, and was declared a national holiday in 1894? The holiday falls on the first Monday of September and we celebrate as tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

In observance, all OCDE sites will be closed on September 6. Have a safe and healthy holiday weekend.

Two middle schools in the @orangeusd will soon ben

Two middle schools in the @orangeusd will soon benefit from a nationwide tech education program set to provide free devices, internet access, and innovative learning programs to under-resourced students.

In partnership with @digitalpromise, Portola and Yorba middle schools are the first in Orange County to join the @verizon Innovative Learning Schools grant program. The program — which launched in 2012 — equips every student and teacher at select middle and high schools with a device and data plan.

As part of a multifaceted outreach program to educate students, residents and organizations about recycling best practices, @ocwaste in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education’s @insidetheoutdoors environmental education program, is launching a new curricular initiative aimed at challenging local learners to adopt sustainable behaviors.

Kindergarten students at Heritage Computer Science

Kindergarten students at Heritage Computer Science Academy in the Garden Grove Unified School District are now prepared for the new school year after a former GGUSD student raised nearly $2,500 to purchase backpacks filled with school supplies. Read more in our link in bio.

The Medical Board of California issued a statement

The Medical Board of California issued a statement this week warning it may take disciplinary action against illegitimate mask exemptions.

The state agency, which licenses medical doctors and investigates complaints against physicians, said it encourages the public to file a complaint if they feel that a physician is granting mask exemptions inappropriately.
