Back on May 20, county Superintendent Dr. Al Mijares surprised five local educators with the news that they’re the Orange County Teachers of the Year for 2016. Erik, now 18, has a high school diploma and something even more important -- people who believe in him. He earned both as a student at the Otto A. Fischer School, one of four detention and treatment facilities run by the Orange County Department of Education’s ACCESS program.

The Brea Olinda Unified School District has announced the selection of a new superintendent. Pending approval by the school board on June 8, Dr. Brad Mason of the Redlands Unified School District will succeed Brea’s longtime chief, Dr. A .J. "Skip" Roland. His start date would be July 1. [...]

We’ve received word this week that OC Pathways, the countywide initiative that’s working to expand career pathways for students from kindergarten through college, has a new partner. OpTerra Energy Services, a national leader in alternative energy solutions, is joining the effort by sponsoring 10 paid summer STEM internships for high school students in the Santa Ana Unified School District. Teams of students from a half-dozen Orange County elementary schools participated in the latest Elementary Science Olympiad on Saturday, May 2. Presented by the Orange County Department of Education, the Olympiad was established to promote STEM learning through hands-on activities that draw connections to the real world. [...]
High school graduation rates for California and Orange County have increased for the fifth year in a row, with English-learners accounting for the biggest overall spikes in 2014, according to data released this week. In Orange County, students who started high school in 2010-11 posted a graduation rate of 88.6 percent in 2014 -- up from 87.5 percent in 2013. That number has been climbing steadily. [...]
