More than 380 local students gathered at the OCDE More than 380 local students gathered at the OCDE campus today for an Academic Pentathlon scrimmage. ⁣ ⁣ The Pentathlon is a five-event competition for middle schoolers. Under the guidance of their coach, teams tackle the fine arts, literature, math, science and social science and compete in the Super Quiz Relay.⁣ ⁣ The county showdown for grades seven and eight will be held March 15. On Tuesday, it came time for students at Harbor Learning Center to carefully dig out the small plots for the tiny strawberry roots. In a few months, this field will produce plump, juicy strawberries in the farm inside the Harbor Learning Center campus in Fountain Valley, a school operated by OCDE’s ACCESS division for students in alternative education and those with special needs.

Prior to graduation, he decided to pursue a career path that would affect students. As a software developer, he designs, creates and implements new programs and processes as a part of the services that the Information Technology division provides. These projects and programs support those who have direct contact with Orange County students.⁣ ⁣ While deciding on an employment path, George decided that the Orange County Department of Education was where he wanted to be. “When I first started, I immediately knew OCDE was a welcoming work environment. In the Westminster School District, children as yo In the Westminster School District, children as young as four months old are now learning Spanish and English as they begin to talk. Westminster’s Infant Toddler Spanish Immersion Program is the first of its kind in Orange County that’s run by a public school district. About 25 children between four and 30 months of age are taught in both Spanish and English while they develop their language skills. #dualimmersion #duallanguage
Woodbridge High School has won its fourth straight Woodbridge High School has won its fourth straight Orange County Academic Decathlon championship. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ With the victory comes an automatic bid to the California Academic Decathlon for the Irvine Unified campus, which has become nothing short of a decathlon dynasty in recent years.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Woodbridge students were naturally in a celebratory mood at Friday evening’s OCAD Awards Ceremony, which took place in the Robert B. Moore Theater at Orange Coast College. Irvine-based Tillys recently stopped by San Juan H Irvine-based Tillys recently stopped by San Juan Hills High School to give away 150 backpacks, coupons and other promotional items to students. The give-a-way was part of the company's ongoing effort to support students in its community with free merchandise to help them in their education. The act of kindness amounted to about $7,000 in Tillys merchandise. Students chose from an assortment JanSport backpacks, ranging from pink and plaid colors and designs to the more traditional black and navy blue colors. @tillys #kindness1billion

Introducing Rosalee Hormuth.⁣ ⁣ Rosalee is a c Introducing Rosalee Hormuth.⁣ ⁣ Rosalee is a coordinator in the Business Services Division with OCDE.⁣ ⁣ For the past 20 years, Rosalee has worked in several departments focusing on accounting and budgeting. Five years ago, an opportunity to lead the School-based Medi-Cal Administrative Activities program (SMAA). The program provides federal reimbursement to school districts in Orange, San Diego and Imperial counties and connect their children and families to health-related services provided by Medi-Cal. ⁣ ⁣ The positive impact these programs have on these children and families are a motivating factor for Rosalee, “… that the state of a child’s physical and mental health can improve school performance by increased attendance, increased concentration levels in the classroom, and expanding their ability to interact with others.”⁣ ⁣ Medi-Cal services provided to students include speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, mental health counseling, and certain nursing services. SMAA funds assist the districts in continuing to provide these services to students who may otherwise never receive them.⁣ ⁣ Rosalee’s tenure at the Orange County Department of Education has offered many rewarding opportunities to learn and grow, but one of the most meaningful is the great friendships she has cultivated along the way!⁣ ⁣ Rosalee Hormuth, making a difference!⁣ ⁣ #OCDEmakingaDifference!⁣

Students and staff from OCDE’s Inside the Outdo Students and staff from OCDE’s Inside the Outdoors environmental education program honored Martin Luther King Jr. Day by helping clean their community. Over the MLK holiday earlier this month, more than 160 volunteers from local schools and representatives from 13 regional businesses joined the Inside the Outdoors Foundation to restore a native habitat at the OC Parks’ Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve. Volunteers, including students from 13 local schools, removed over 125 60-gallon bags of invasive plants, enabling native plants to re-establish. Items included couch cushion, bike tire, 23 tennis balls, basketballs, handballs, golf balls, shoes, gym bags, trunk liner, lumber, and bags full of plastics such as straws, bottle caps, and drink bottles. #kindness1billion @insidetheoutdoors

A novel coronavirus — often shown as “nCoV” — is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. The Orange County Health Care Agency says the risk for school children in Orange County is minimal. To date, the illness has primarily affected adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but the CDC also recommends taking other daily precautions.
