As part of our “College and Career Ready” series, Orange County Department of Education Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ramon Miramontes recently returned to Westminster High School to learn all about the Chief Science Officers program.
Westminster is said to be the first California school to participate in the program, which empowers students to act as STEM liaisons on their campuses and in their communities.
As Chief Science Officers, or CSOs, students from grades six through 12 are elected by their peers to champion science, technology, engineering and math initiatives. Student leaders create action plans aimed at enhancing STEM awareness and engagement.
Dr. Miramontes spoke with Tina, a junior, and sophomores Sophia and Kailani about the impact of their roles, their shared experiences in advancing STEM education, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Florida to collaborate with other CSOs from across the country.
