In the news: OC Children’s Book Festival, kindness challenge week, new teacher training programs and more Staff reports September 23, 2016 It’s Friday, and here’s a weekly roundup of Orange County education stories you may have missed: The Orange County Children’s Book Festival is set to take place Sunday at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. Bucket filling, kindness stations and dance parties were among the ways campuses in the Centralia School District participated in the Great Kindness Challenge Week. The Los Alamitos High School band received an invitation to perform at London’s New Year’s Day Parade and Festival in January 2018. The California Department of Education assembled a committee to develop social and emotional learning guidelines for schools across the state, tapping OCDE Assistant Superintendent Christine Olmstead and a dozen other top educators. Students at Sonora Elementary School in Costa Mesa adopted an aspirational college to celebrate during a program that focuses on college readiness. A new, updated system will be implemented in 2017 for California’s teacher accreditation and training programs.
