Inside the Outdoors, in partnership with OC Parks, invites volunteers to join the 2024 California Coastal Cleanup Day at Upper Newport Bay, one of California’s last remaining coastal wetlands, on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Volunteers of all ages — guided by OCDE’s environmental education program — will assist in restoration activities, contributing to the preservation of the estuary, which is home to several endangered species and numerous migratory birds.
Participants are encouraged to bring a camera to capture the beauty of the bay and share the experience on social media. Volunteers are advised to wear closed-toe shoes and bring reusable water bottles. The cleanup effort will be canceled in the event of rain in the forecast.
The cleanup is one of several initiatives Inside the Outdoors — or ITO — is celebrating its 50th anniversary, with a series of events designed to reconnect the community with its mission. For half a century, ITO has been at the forefront of environmental education in Orange County, fostering a deep connection between students and the natural world.
This annual cleanup, part of the International Coastal Cleanup organized by the Ocean Conservancy, engages communities statewide in the task of removing debris from creeks, rivers, lakes and coastlines. According to ITO, more than 10,000 students visit Upper Newport Bay each year through its field trips, making this cleanup crucial for maintaining the ecological and educational value of the area.
