From providing behavioral supports to offering career guidance, school counselors play an integral role in elevating the growth and success of students.
In preparation for its annual celebration of school counselors and counseling advocates, the Orange County Department of Education is now accepting nominations to honor professionals who go above and beyond in meeting scholars’ academic, social-emotional and career needs.
Educators, school staff, parents and even students are invited to nominate school counselors or counseling champions serving students transitional kindergarten through 12th grade. Nominations are open online until Oct. 18 and also include counselors from the community college sector.
Launched five years ago, the Orange County School Counselor Recognition Program shines a spotlight on the county’s top counselors for their dedication to serving scholars and school communities. These education professionals not only help students choose courses and apply for college but also provide critical resources to those who may be struggling.
“We are proud to honor the incredible dedication and impact our counselors have on students’ lives,” said Margaret Llamas, coordinator of college and career readiness. “The Counselor Recognition Program is an opportunity to celebrate the essential role they play in guiding our students toward academic, emotional and career success.”
From those nominated, a select group of counselors and counseling advocates will be recognized at the 11th annual OC Counselor Symposium hosted by OCDE on Feb. 5, 2025, during National School Counseling Week. Educators can register for the event by visiting the event website.
This year’s theme, “Elevating Scholars: Cultivating Genius,” will encourage counselors, educators and community leaders to explore strategies to collectively nurture the unique potential within every student.
Nominations for school counselors or counseling advocates can be submitted online. For more information about the OCDE Counselor Awards, contact the team at counselorawards@ocde.us.
