OC Pathways recently hit the road with representatives from Virgin Galactic to share career advice with students at Los Alamitos High School and Cypress College. And they all traveled by way of a bright green RV that should look familiar to viewers of the Roadtrip Nation documentary series.
Roadtrip Nation is about three locals who travel around the world in their iconic motorhome asking successful people how they turned their passions into careers. The OC Pathways trip on March 28 reversed that formula, transporting Virgin Galactic Vice President of Program Development Tim Buzza and his colleague, Composites Manufacturing Engineer Caitlin Curtis, to two local campuses via the lime green RV.
The visits resulted from a partnership between OC Pathways and Roadtrip Nation that began with last year’s OC Pathways Showcase, where Buzza was the featured speaker. This time around, Buzza and Curtis motored to Los Al and Cypress College to discuss the curvy career paths that led them to Virgin Galactic, and they encouraged local students to follow their own roads. Meanwhile, a video crew from Roadtrip Nation had its cameras rolling to capture the segment above.
Led by OCDE and Saddleback College, OC Pathways was launched through a 2014 state grant. The objective is to equip students for college and careers in STEM-related sectors by connecting educators with industry leaders. Along with developing coursework that combines academics and career skills, OC Pathways has created numerous work-based learning opportunities for students and empowered educators with innovative teaching strategies.
