Officials at Anaheim High School have built a virtual map of the campuses using the latest technology that could allow law enforcement and other first responders to better assist students and staff in case of emergency.
Anaheim High is the first school in the nation, officials said, to be mapped digitally using a process that required 16,000 photos of every angle of the campus.
The Orange County Register chronicled how this new system could help first responders cut response times during emergencies — such as active shooters or earthquakes — to save lives.
Under the previous system, authorities often worked with site plans and maps — sometimes outdated — that show where buildings are located, but not what it looks like inside, said David Sobel, founder of The Sobel Group, the San Diego-based firm that developed the system.
The system includes floorplans, aerial maps and site plans, which officers can view on mobile devices and computers. Anaheim High School is the largest and oldest high school in the Anaheim Union High School District with an enrollment of 3,100, making it the perfect testing ground for the new technology, Superintendent Michael Matsuda said.
