Quick look: Former NFL linebacker, educator and community leader Marvin Smith joins the FutureCurrent podcast to share how a career shaped by service, emotional intelligence and prevention has guided decades of work helping young people discover their potential.
What drives someone to walk away from a successful career in pursuit of something bigger? For Marvin Smith, the answer was service to others.
“I’m not driven by greed, I’m driven by need,” he says. “I want to be light where there’s darkness.”
That sense of purpose anchors the latest episode of FutureCurrent, as Smith joins County Superintendent Dr. Stefan Bean to reflect on a journey that has taken him from the National Football League to aerospace, psychology, education and community leadership.
A certified human behavioral specialist and advocate for youth, Smith reflects on lessons from his father, an educator who stressed the importance of education and preparing for life beyond football. Those conversations helped shape the path his career would ultimately take.
Building opportunities
In the episode, he discusses why he left a promising career in the aerospace industry to return to the communities that inspired him. The motivation was to build opportunities for young people who needed someone to believe in them.
“I said, ‘I want to be a bridge to create access,'” Smith says.
