Students enrolled in the Femineer program at Buena Park Middle School aren’t just learning about robotics, they’re building them from the ground up.

Sponsored by Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Engineering, the Femineer program aims to inspire K-12 students to pursue STEM, otherwise known as science, technology, engineering and math fields, in their education and future careers. Buena Park is one of 50 schools in the state participating in the program.

The initiative provides girls with project-based learning, engineering student mentors and opportunities to visit the Cal Poly campus, while building a sustainable program and community for current and future STEM leaders.

Under the leadership of career technical educator Shelley Andros, who has been trained by engineering departments from Cal Poly Pomona and San Diego State University, the middle school has been a participating partner in the university program since 2018.

The application process requires students to submit an application and a recommendation letter from a teacher.

On Feb. 27, the two teams from the campus’ Femineers program put their lessons to the test by participating in the Balloon Battle Tournament hosted by Buena Park High School’s Advanced Robotics and Mechatronics program.

In preparation for the Fullerton Joint Union High School District campus’ event, students were tasked with designing and constructing a robot capable of warding off opponents while navigating a maze inspired by the popular racing game series Mario Kart. Each robot was adorned with three colorful balloons tied on top, symbolizing the different teams involved in the competition.

Both teams from the program advanced to the semifinals rounds, with one of them securing second place overall.

“I wanted to give them a platform for refining their engineering, problem-solving and team-building skills,” Andros said. “The process also exposes them to possible career paths they may not have considered.”

By engaging with real-world applications, the Femineers acquire the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary to become confident and strong in their future careers.
