Dr. Lorraine M. Perez named next superintendent of Santa Ana Unified School District

Quick look: Dr. Lorraine M. Perez has been appointed superintendent of the Santa Ana Unified School District, bringing over 20 years of educational leadership experience. Known for her student-centered approach, she will continue focusing on academic achievement and strengthening community partnerships.

After an extensive search, the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education has appointed Dr. Lorraine M. Perez as its next superintendent, effective July 1.

According to the district, Perez brings more than 20 years of experience in public education, including the past five as SAUSD’s deputy superintendent of educational services. She is recognized for developing student-centered programs and is well positioned for a smooth transition into her new role.

“Dr. Perez has earned the trust and respect of our students, families, staff, and community partners,” said SAUSD Board President Hector Bustos. “She is a thoughtful, strategic leader who understands the needs of our district and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to equity, academic excellence, and innovation. We are confident she is the right person to guide SAUSD into the future.”

In her new role, Perez said she plans to focus on student achievement and strengthen partnerships with local businesses, colleges and community organizations to expand resources that support academic outcomes and student well-being.

“I am honored and excited to serve as Superintendent of Santa Ana Unified,” said Dr. Perez. “I remain deeply committed to ensuring every student receives a high-quality education that opens doors to opportunity. Together with our educators, families, and community partners, we will continue building strong academic programs, fostering innovation, and supporting the success of every student.”

Perez is no stranger to leadership roles in education. Prior to joining SAUSD, she held various roles in the San Bernardino City Unified School District, including assistant superintendent of educational services, assistant superintendent of student services, director of elementary instruction, and coordinator of elementary instruction.

She began her career as a classroom teacher in the Baldwin Park Unified School District before becoming the principal of a dual-language school — an experience that helped shape her educational leadership philosophy.

Outside of education, Perez has served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors at Cal State Fullerton and draws from her experience working with the Walt Disney Company and as a small business owner. For more than 15 years, she has also contributed to her community as a city commissioner, including roles on the Economic Development and Parks and Recreation commissions.

Perez’s appointment follows the retirement of Superintendent Jerry Almendarez, who announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down in July. Almendarez served as SAUSD’s superintendent for five years, guiding the district through the COVID-19 pandemic, overseeing the development of the SAUSD Graduate Profile and championing equity and community engagement.

Santa Ana Unified School District serves approximately 35,000 students across 56 schools in the city of Santa Ana. It is the 19th largest public school district in California.
