FutureCurrent: Bright Futures Foundation leader David Blair discusses student-centered innovation

Quick look: On the latest episode of FutureCurrent, Bright Futures Foundation Executive Director David Blair discusses his unconventional path from opera singer to nonprofit leader — and how it informs his work supporting students across Orange County.

David Blair believes some of the most meaningful learning experiences happen when education breaks from routine.

“I get students who tell me about when the classroom stepped outside and changed the setting, or when the teacher became a fellow peer and … a guide on the side,” he said.

“When I hear those types of stories, I go, ‘That is the missing link.’”

As executive director of the Orange County Schools Bright Futures Foundation, Blair said those moments of creativity, connection and sometimes disruption are exactly the kinds of experiences his organization hopes to support in schools across Orange County.

On the latest episode of FutureCurrent, Blair joined County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stefan Bean and educator Lainie Rowell for a conversation about innovation, engagement and the importance of building partnerships that support schools and families across Orange County.

Launched last year as an independent nonprofit, the OC Bright Futures Foundation works alongside the Orange County Department of Education and local school districts to expand educational opportunities. The idea is to build partnerships, engage communities, invest in innovation and elevate proven programs.

But before he entered the world of nonprofit leadership, Blair actually spent years as a professional opera singer, performing internationally at venues like Carnegie Hall and opera houses around the world. But then came a turning point during a flight home from Europe, when he realized he wanted something different.

“I had realized what I was pursuing was what everyone else told me I was good at, more so than what I myself was passionate about,” he said.

That shift led Blair into nonprofit work with organizations including the Orange County chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and, later, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast, where he developed a passion for youth services and community impact.

Rethinking traditional approaches

Now in charge of the Bright Futures Foundation, Blair said he sees education as an opportunity to listen to students, families and educators — and to rethink traditional approaches when needed.

Bean said the foundation was created after conversations with educators, businesses and community organizations about how to better support innovative programs across Orange County schools.

“We saw that there was a lot of need,” the county superintendent said, “but we also saw that there were organizations that lifted our students through people or programs.”

The conversation also highlighted a new partnership between the Bright Futures Foundation and Hyundai Motor America. Through the Future Innovators Initiative, Hyundai is investing $100,000 in grants supporting innovative learning opportunities at 10 Orange County schools.

Seen, supported and empowered

Rather than prescribing specific solutions, Blair said the Hyundai initiative encourages schools to identify what will make the greatest impact for their students.

“But really, it’s about the knowledge. It’s the spark,” he said. “If we can have schools apply for this grant and tell us what that spark’s going to look like, we get to go back to partners like Hyundai and say, ‘This is what your investment is doing in the lives of students here locally.’”

Throughout the episode, Blair emphasized the value of collaboration and the importance of ensuring students feel seen, supported and empowered to shape their futures.

“I believe my greatest purpose as a foundation serving all 28 districts here in Orange County is to be that light that helps guide other kids,” he said, “and helps other kids know that this is what education looks like when it’s done in a way that serves you best.”
