Quick look: Inside the Outdoors will welcome students, families and community members to California Coastal Cleanup Day at Upper Newport Bay on Saturday, Sept. 19, where volunteers will assist with cleanup activities at the coastal wetland.
Volunteers are invited to join Inside the Outdoors at Upper Newport Bay for the 42nd annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Inside the Outdoors, the environmental education program administered by the Orange County Department of Education, will host the cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon at Upper Newport Bay, 2301 University Drive in Newport Beach.
Students, families and other community members can participate in cleanup activities at the coastal wetland. No special skills are required, and gloves, buckets and bags will be provided.
California Coastal Cleanup Day is organized statewide by the California Coastal Commission in partnership with local governments and community organizations. The annual effort brings volunteers to beaches, creeks, rivers, lakes and other waterways throughout the state to remove trash and debris. The Coastal Commission identifies it as California’s largest annual volunteer event.
Caring for an outdoor classroom
Upper Newport Bay is home to several endangered species as well as migratory and year-round resident birds. More than 10,000 students visit the site each year through Inside the Outdoors field trips, and the cleanup gives community members an opportunity to help care for the area where those learning experiences take place.
Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes, bring a reusable water bottle and be prepared to get muddy. Street parking will be available, and the event will be canceled in the event of rain.
