Inside the Outdoors to host volunteer restoration day at Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park

Calling all nature enthusiasts: Inside the Outdoors, in partnership with the Bolsa Chica Conservancy, is organizing a volunteer restoration day at Harriett Wieder Regional Park in Huntington Beach to help preserve its unique coastal habitat.

The event will take place on March 8 from 9 to 11 a.m. at 19251 Seapoint Ave., where volunteers alongside representatives from ITO and the Bolsa Chica Conservancy will help remove non-native plant species and replace them with native ones.

An integral part of the Huntington Beach community, the Bolsa Chica Conservancy is home to a diverse array of mammals, reptiles, birds and marine vertebrates and invertebrates. These animals rely heavily on the surrounding ecosystem, sustained by a variety of native plant species.

However, the introduction of non-native plants poses a significant threat to the health and sustainability of this habitat, especially since many of the wildlife species in the area are sensitive to environmental changes.

That’s why since 2016, volunteers have played a crucial role in restoring the area.

“Volunteer events like this one provide a unique opportunity for the community to actively participate in environmental stewardship,” said Yarib Dheming, ITO’s school and community outreach manager. “By removing invasive plants, volunteers help restore native habitats, protect local wildlife and support the health of our ecosystem. It’s a chance to learn about the natural world while making a positive impact in our community.”

Now in its 50th year of operation, ITO — a program administered by the Orange County Department of Education — empowers over 125,000 students annually to explore the natural world by providing environment-based learning.

To sign up, volunteers must complete a short form before the day of the event. For more information about Inside the Outdoors or this event, contact insidetheoutdoors@ocde.us or call 714-708-3885.
