Quick look: Dr. Don Austin officially began serving as superintendent of Laguna Beach Unified last week, returning to a district where he previously served as principal of Laguna Beach High School.
Dr. Don Austin is back in Laguna Beach — this time as superintendent.
The veteran educator officially began leading the Laguna Beach Unified School District this week, returning to a community where he previously served as principal of Laguna Beach High School — and where his three children attended school.
The appointment marks the latest superintendent transition in Orange County, where several school districts have welcomed new leaders over the past two years.

Austin brings more than 30 years of experience in California public education, having served as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent.
“Since leaving Laguna Beach, I have had the privilege of leading high-performing school districts through periods of challenge, growth and change,” he said in a message to families and the community. “I look forward to bringing that experience back to LBUSD while also taking the time to listen and learn from students, staff, families and community members.”
His connection to Laguna Beach dates back to 2006, when he became principal of Laguna Beach High School.
During his five-year tenure there, the school earned recognition as both a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School. The campus also received a Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association and was recognized by the College Board AP Honor Roll for supporting the success of underrepresented students.
After leaving Laguna Beach in 2011, Austin served as assistant superintendent of educational services for the Huntington Beach Union High School District before being appointed superintendent of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District in 2014.
In 2018, he became superintendent of the Palo Alto Unified School District, serving there until returning to Laguna Beach on July 1.
Along with a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Baker University, Austin holds a doctorate of education and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Azusa Pacific University.
His appointment follows a leadership change in Laguna Beach Unified earlier this year. In May, the Board of Education approved a mutual separation agreement with former Superintendent Dr. Jason Glass, who had served in the role since July 2025.
Laguna Beach Unified’s Board of Education approved the new employment agreement during its June 4 meeting.
“Dr. Austin is in high demand as he wraps up his time at Palo Alto,” said board President Sheri Morgan. “Securing him on July 1 is a win for our district.”
“Dr. Austin’s proven leadership will help us drive significant academic progress, maintain fiscal responsibility, and improve governance and planning especially during these complex times,” she added.
Opportunities for families and community members to meet Austin will be offered at public events scheduled for Aug. 11 and Aug. 13, according to the district. Additional details, including times and locations, will be announced at a later date.
