A friendly message. A request to move a chat off a public platform. A new “online friend.”
These are often the first steps in digital interactions that can place students at risk. On Feb. 26, the Orange County Department of Education will host a live virtual event designed to help families recognize warning signs and respond with practical strategies.
The session, titled “Avoiding Strangers & Dangerous Situations: Help Your Child Stay Safe Online,” is being presented in partnership with SmartSocial.com and will begin at 4 p.m. The virtual discussion is open to parents and educators across Orange County. Advanced registration is required.
Orange County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stefan Bean is set to participate alongside additional special guests. Together, they will explore how strangers initiate contact with young people online, the tactics used to build trust or gather personal information, and the red flags families should watch for in apps, games and social media platforms.
“Our students are growing up in digital spaces that change quickly,” Bean said. “As educators and parents, we have a shared responsibility to understand those environments and help children recognize when something isn’t right. Events like this give families practical tools and a place to ask questions.”
The session will address common concerns, including what risks are associated with online “friendships,” what types of messages students might receive from strangers, and how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence tools can collect or surface personal information.
Organizers say the goal is to provide clear, actionable information and conversation starters that encourage children to speak up early if something feels uncomfortable or unsafe.
Registered participants who attend the live session will be eligible to enter a drawing for prizes, including a Kindle, 3D printer or Bluetooth speaker, while supplies last.
Attendees can access the online event by phone, tablet or desktop computer. Registration is available on the Smart Social website.
