OCDE to host its next substitute teacher recruitment event on Thursday, Feb. 1

OCDE Substitute Teacher Recruitment Fair
More than 170 people attended the Orange County Department of Education’s spring substitute teacher recruitment fair in March.

The Orange County Department of Education is hosting a substitute teacher recruitment event with free fingerprinting services and permit processing for the first 100 registrants on Thursday, Feb. 1.

The event will take place at OCDE’s Recruitment Center in Costa Mesa, located at 3001 Redhill Ave. inside Building 4 in Suite 109. The department will schedule appointments between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. to meet with eligible participants who have pre-registered to attend.

Substitute teachers play an important role in schools as contracted workers who fill in when regular teachers are absent to prevent a disruption in education. Yet, as EdSource reports, California is continuing to face a substitute teacher shortage. In search of qualified applicants to fill these positions, some districts have boosted their day pay rates, stepped up their marketing efforts and hired their own permanent in-house pool of subs.

An Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit is considered the most common type of permit needed to become a sub. Contrary to the name, it’s valid for a full calendar year and enables the holder to work in all classroom settings.

Along with helping aspiring substitutes navigate the process, OCDE professionals will provide information on teacher careers, and they’ll explain how to use the EdJoin website to apply for job openings. The department’s recruitment team will also be facilitating substitute teacher interviews for OCDE’s own Alternative Education and Special Education programs at the Feb. 1 event.
