Interested in becoming a substitute teacher?
The Orange County Department of Education will walk candidates through the process during an upcoming substitute teacher recruitment fair that will include free fingerprinting services and permit processing for the first 150 registrants.
The open house-style event will take place from 1 to 6:30 p.m. on March 9 at OCDE’s Recruitment Center in Costa Mesa, located at 3001 Redhill Ave. inside Building 4 in suite 109.
Substitute teachers play an important role in schools as contracted workers who fill in when regular teachers are absent. Yet, as EdSource reports, California is currently facing a substitute teacher shortage. In search of qualified applicants to fill these positions, some districts have boosted their daily pay rates and stepped up their marketing efforts.
An Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit is considered the most common type of permit needed to become a sub. Contrary to the name, it’s valid for one calendar year, and it allows the holder to work in all classroom settings.
Along with helping aspiring substitutes navigate the process, OCDE professionals will provide information on teaching careers at the March 9 event, and they’ll explain how to use the EdJoin website to apply for job openings. The department’s recruitment team will also be looking to set up interviews for OCDE’s own Alternative Education and Special Education programs
