The Huntington Beach Union High School District announced Thursday that Westminster High School has been selected as a National Demonstration School by AVID, a global nonprofit dedicated to closing the achievement gap.
Short for Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID assists educators with research‐based strategies to prepare students for success in high school, college and beyond — particularly those who have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education. Its National Demonstration School program recognizes schools that have successfully implemented or expanded AVID programs.
Westminster High, selected through a rigorous application and review process that included a site visit, joins approximately 150 other AVID National Demonstration Schools nationwide. That represents fewer than 3 percent of campuses where AVID has been implemented.
“It is a tremendous honor to be selected as a Demo,” Principal Joseph Fraser said, “and we are proud of our AVID program and our school as a whole. The use of AVID strategies has positively impacted students and staff, and we continue to see a more engaged and college-ready student body.”
