This spring, students can learn about water use and runoff through interactive assemblies or explore local water resources while engaging in class projects — all thanks to water education programs hosted by Inside the Outdoors

In celebration of World Water Day on March 22, the OCDE-led environmental education program is making a splash by opening applications to Orange County classrooms eager to learn more about the wonders of water.

The traveling scientist programs, available for students in grades three through 12, are offered through a grant partnership with the Municipal Water District of Orange County and the Family of Orange County Water Providers.

Third- through fifth-grade students can participate in the Drip Drop assemblies, where they will uncover clues about the mysteries of water challenges in their communities through engaging, interactive activities.

Meanwhile, the Wonders of H2O program tasks middle and high school students with studying water samples to identify sources of pollution and collecting data to explore local water resources, such as the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

“Inside the Outdoors’ water education programs immerse students in real-world water challenges through hands-on investigations, historical explorations and scientific analysis,” said Yarib Dheming, ITO school and community outreach manager. “These programs help students understand local water resources, develop critical thinking skills and become lifelong environmental stewards committed to water conservation.”

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this school year, Inside the Outdoors has provided immersive outdoor experiences to more than 3.5 million students through field trip opportunities and hands-on classroom lessons.
