The Orange County Department of Education hosted the second annual Legislative Roundtable Day on Friday, bringing together a coalition of superintendents, state legislators and other policy shapers to discuss pressing issues impacting local schools.
Participants included State Senator Josh Newman, who serves as chair of the Senate’s Committee on Education, along with California Assembly members Cottie Petrie-Norris and Blanca Pacheco, school district leaders, OCDE staff, and representatives from the offices of other state officials. Together, they addressed the need for local fiscal flexibility to address learning recovery and acceleration, budget stability and innovative partnerships, with a focus on the expanding presence of artificial intelligence.
The session was led by Norma Martinez, superintendent of the Centralia Elementary School District and chair of the Orange County Superintendents workgroup, with OCDE Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ramon Miramontes providing the opening remarks.
“Today’s meeting was not just about addressing current challenges but forging a path towards a future where education continues to be adaptive, inclusive and innovative,” Miramontes said. “The insights and collaborative spirit we’ve seen today underscore the power of partnerships in transforming education and driving positive student outcomes.”
As the roundtable concluded, policymakers shared their reflections, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration and open dialogue. The forum also provided opportunities for additional questions.
