As the new school year unfolds, the Orange County Department of Education invites middle and high school teams to participate in the 2024-25 Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon season, building on last season’s success.
This year’s competitions will elevate academic achievement even further with the theme “Our Changing Climate.”
Founded in 1968 by former Orange County Superintendent Dr. Robert Peterson, the Academic Decathlon challenges teams of nine students, which include three students from three academic levels — “Honor” students (those with GPAs of 3.8 and above), “Scholastic” students (GPAs of 3.20 to 3.79) and “Varsity” students (GPAs 3.199 and below).
“Participating in these programs fosters academic growth and lasting friendships,” said Kristin Rigby, OCDE’s coordinator of academic events. “Students build confidence, expand their knowledge and gain a sense of accomplishment that prepares them for future academic and professional success.”
High school competitors competing in the Decathlon will take objective exams in seven subject areas, deliver speeches, participate in interviews and write timed essays, culminating in the Super Quiz Relay. Middle school students will engage in the Pentathlon, featuring exams and events in fine arts, mathematics, literature, science and social science.
The Academic Decathlon will be held over three days in January and February, while the Pentathlon will run from March through May.
Academic Decathlon coaches will meet Tuesday, Sept. 24. Meanwhile, new Pentathlon coaches will have their orientation on Thursday, Sept. 26, followed by their first meeting on Oct. 1. All meetings will be held virtually. In the event that new coaches are unable to attend the scheduled orientation dates, OCDE staff can provide the information through individual sessions.
Middle or high school educators interested in starting a program on their campus can contact OCDE Coordinator Kristin Rigby at 714-966-4435 or krigby@ocde.us.
