State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond spent Monday morning at the Jordan Academy of Language and Computer Science in the Orange Unified School District reading some classic Dr. Seuss books to celebrate National Read Across America Day.
Thurmond visited classrooms, talking to students about how reading serves as the foundation for all learning. This is the second year the state’s schools chief has visited the Orange campus. He was joined by OUSD Superintendent Dr. Gunn Marie Hansen, Orange County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Mijares and other community leaders.
National Read Across America Day is an initiative aimed at encouraging stronger reading habits among children. It was created by the National Education Association in 1997. It’s held on the school day closest to March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
