The new dual enrollment opportunity will give students hands-on training, college credit and a pathway into high-demand careers in drone and autonomous technologies.
Brea Olinda High School students will soon be able to take their education to new heights through an expanded dual enrollment partnership with Fullerton College that offers a professional drone piloting certificate beginning in fall 2025.
The new Uncrewed Aerial Systems Piloting Certificate Program will give juniors and seniors at Brea Olinda High School hands-on experience in drone operations, regulations, safety and real-world applications in fields such as engineering, public safety and even cinematography. Students will be able to earn up to 12 college units and work toward Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 certification while still in high school.
“This Drone Certificate Program is an excellent addition to other dual enrollment options and an example of how we are preparing students for the future by blending technology, innovation and practical skills,” said Brea Olinda Unified School District Superintendent Brinda Leon.
Through a series of classes taught at the high school and over the summer, students will complete coursework in applied drone piloting, advanced drone skills and industrial safety, with access to Fullerton College faculty and resources.
Students who begin with dual enrollment courses in high school could potentially continue through to a four-year degree in a fast-growing STEM field. Research indicates that dual enrollment students are about 15 percentage points more likely to earn any college degree and 9 percentage points more likely to obtain a bachelor’s degree compared to their peers who did not participate in dual enrollment programs.
“This is a transformational moment for STEM education and workforce development in Orange County,” said Jay Seidel, director of the Fullerton College Drone Technology Department.
The program prepares students to be safe, capable pilots while exploring real-world drone applications across industries. It is recognized by the FAA as part of its Collegiate Training Initiative and holds certifications from the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International and ASTM International.
Students and families interested in the drone certificate program or other dual-enrollment opportunities can contact the Brea Olinda High School counseling office or visit the BOHS Dual Enrollment website.
