If you’ve heard me speak this year, you know I often talk about what it means to lift others up.
At its core, the idea is simple: Each of us has the ability to inspire and empower those around us by listening, modeling authenticity and recognizing the unique gifts in others. But simple doesn’t mean small. I see the impact of this every day across OCDE and throughout our 28 districts.

A teacher who notices a spark in a student. A staff member who shows patience and empathy in a challenging moment. A family partnering with a school to help their child succeed. These moments of encouragement and care ripple outward, strengthening our entire educational community.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I’m reminded of how deeply this idea shaped my own life.
Many know that I grew up in foster care before being adopted by the Beans, a family whose love changed the trajectory of my life. The holidays meant gathering with my large family around meals prepared by my mom, whose cooking brought us together.
But what stayed with me most wasn’t the food — although it was a close second. What I remember most is the atmosphere she created, warm and welcoming and rooted in the belief that everyone has value and something to contribute. That’s where I first learned that lifting others up begins with how we show up for the people around us.
That belief continues to guide our shared work and is reflected in the goals of our 5-3-1 Strategic Plan — supporting students, fostering safe and caring environments and inspiring the potential in every learner. These priorities aren’t about programs or initiatives. They’re about helping people rise.
And I see that commitment lived out every single day by our staff, our district partners and our broader community. Your dedication, compassion and willingness to invest in others make a profound difference in the lives of students and families across Orange County. I am deeply grateful for the partnership we share.
As you head into the holiday, I hope you find time to rest, reflect and enjoy meaningful moments with the people who lift you up. And I hope you carry with you the reminder that you make a difference.
Thank you for all that you do, and I wish you and those you love a Thanksgiving filled with warmth, gratitude and connection.
