Every year, social science educators across the country inspire students to dive deep into historical events, uncovering new perspectives through National History Day.
To help Orange County teachers bring the past to life, OCDE is hosting a National History Day-OC contest kickoff and training on Thursday, Sept. 19. In continued celebration of the competition’s 50th anniversary, this event will provide updated guidance for both new and returning coaches while offering strategies to engage students with history through innovative interdisciplinary projects.
The kickoff will showcase an array of student projects including podcasts, exhibits, websites, documentaries, posters and even live performances by students grades four through 12. Educators will also have the chance to participate in a Q&A session with mentor coaches, gaining clarity on contest guidelines and best practices for advising students.
Teachers can register here for the free event held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Orange County Department of Education, located at 200 Kalmus Drive.
This year’s theme, “Rights & Responsibilities in History,” will invite young historians to explore topics of their choice, conducting in-depth historical analysis on cause and effect, time and place, and overall impact. The contest sees nearly half a million students participate annually, with support from thousands of teachers nationwide.
“National History Day empowers students by offering them both voice and choice in their learning,” said Julie Hull, OCDE coordinator. “They can select any topic that fits the theme and choose how they want to present their findings.”
Local educators can sign up online for the NHD-OC Kickoff and Student Showcase, and reach out to the NHD-OC team with questions at nhdinfo@ocde.us. Learn more about how to get involved in the countywide competition at the NHD-OC website.
